Congressman and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn Endorses Reverend Raphael Warnock for U.S. Senate

High-ranking, longtime party leader and champion for working families backs Warnock’s bid for the Senate, as the Campaign continues consolidating support across Georgia and nationally

Atlanta, GA – Today, South Carolina Congressman and Majority Whip for the United States House of Representatives Jim Clyburn announced his endorsement of Reverend Raphael Warnock, who is running to represent all Georgians in the U.S. Senate. His support comes on the heels of endorsements from members of the Augusta, Columbus, Albany and Athens delegations. In his endorsement, Clyburn pointed to the need for Warnock’s voice in Washington during this time of unrest in the country.

Clyburn, who represents South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, was elected in 1993 and currently serves as the House’s Majority Whip, making him the highest ranking African-American congressperson and third-highest ranking Democrat overall, in the chamber. As chairman, he has led various caucuses and committees, including the Congressional Black Caucus, the House Democratic Caucus and the Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis. Since entering the halls of Congress, he has led on a range of issues that are central to Warnock’s campaign, including education and health care.

“As a man of strong conviction and deep character, Reverend Raphael Warnock is just the type of voice we desperately need in the United States Senate. Quality and affordable healthcare, voting rights, and criminal justice reform aren’t new issues for Raphael. From the streets to the sanctuary, these are fights he’s been in for years. And now he is taking that fight to Washington,” said Congressman Jim Clyburn. “I am proud to stand with Raphael and support his campaign wholeheartedly. In these times, the Senate could use a Pastor; Reverend Warock can and will seize the moment.”

“Congressman Clyburn has been a voice of conscience and steward of faith in Congress for many years. Leadership like his is so desperately needed today and I am honored to have his support in this movement to fight for working people,” said Reverend Warnock.

Warnock launched his campaign for the U.S. Senate in January 2020, and independent analysts at Cook Political immediately moved the race to one of the most competitive in the nation. Reverend Warnock outraised every candidate – Democrat and Republican – for the special election in the first fundraising quarter this year. He’s also earned support from leaders across the state including Stacey Abrams, Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Jason Carter and countless local officials. In addition to robust support from Georgians, he is backed by Planned Parenthood, End Citizens United, Democracy for America, the Congressional Black Caucus as well as Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and multiple United States Senators, including Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker.

About Reverend Warnock

Reverend Raphael Warnock grew up in Kayton Homes public housing in Savannah. Fourteen years ago, he was chosen to serve as Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the former pulpit of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is only the fifth Senior Pastor in the history of the church and the youngest pastor ever selected to serve in that position. Reverend Warnock believes his service does not stop at the church door, and has been an advocate to expand health care coverage and to ensure hardworking Georgians can make a living wage. As Senator, Reverend Warnock will bring to Washington the concerns of struggling Georgia families who wonder why no one is looking out for them, and focus on fighting for quality, affordable health care, for the dignity of working people who are paid too little as our government works more for Wall Street, and to make sure every voice is heard.
