FACT CHECK: Loeffler Misrepresenting Decades Old Event In Which Law Enforcement Praised Warnock As “Very Helpful,” Called Incident A “Miscommunication”

Atlanta, GA — Once again, Kelly Loeffler is misrepresenting a 20-year-old event that law enforcement said was the result of a “miscommunication,” and in which Reverend Warnock was praised as “very helpful.”

Here are the facts

Independent fact-checkers have looked into this attack and rated it “mostly false.”

Warnock wanted to make sure teenage counselors and campers were not questioned without a parent or attorney present.

  • “Warnock said he was charged when he asserted that lawyers should be present during the teens’ interviews.” [Politifact]

The charges against Warnock and another minister were dropped and called a “miscommunication.” Law enforcement praised Warnock for being “very helpful” with the investigation.

  • “On Oct. 30, 2002, a judge dismissed the charges. The dismissal came at the request of a prosecutor, who said: ‘What we decided was there was some miscommunication that had occurred with them. They were very helpful with the continued investigation. It would not have been a prudent use of resources to have prosecuted them.’” [Politifact]
  • “Media reports and court records show the charges against Warnock were dropped at the request of law enforcement and investigators said he was “very helpful” with the probe. They blamed miscommunication.” [Atlanta Journal-Constitution]
