Decorated veteran, Georgia’s most recent Democratic Senator and Democratic Leader back Warnock’s bid for the Senate, as the Campaign continues consolidating support across Georgia and nationally
Atlanta, GA – Today, former United States Senator Max Cleland announced his endorsement of Reverend Raphael Warnock. The announcement comes on the heels of an endorsement from Congressman Jim Clyburn and highlights the momentum for Warnock’s U.S. Senate campaign, as he ends the second quarter backed by numerous Georgia officials, national organizations and members of Congress. In addition to Senator Cleland, Georgia House Minority Leader Bob Trammell, former State Representative Stacey Evans and more Peach state legislators have joined Team Warnock, including members of the Macon delegation.
Cleland, who was one of Georgia’s United States Senators from 1997 – 2003, also served as the American Battle Monuments Commission Secretary under President Barack Obama and Administrator of Veterans Affairs (now known as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs) under President Jimmy Carter. A native Atlantan, he was also Georgia’s Secretary of State from 1987 – 1996 and spent time in the State Senate. Prior to running for office, Cleland served in the Vietnam War, later being awarded Silver and Bronze Stars for his sacrifices.

He’s also earned support from leaders across the state including Stacey Abrams, Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Jason Carter and countless local officials. In addition to robust support from Georgians, he is backed by Planned Parenthood, End Citizens United, Democracy for America, the Congressional Black Caucus as well as Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and multiple United States Senators, including Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker.
About Reverend Warnock
Reverend Raphael Warnock grew up in Kayton Homes public housing in Savannah. Fourteen years ago, he was chosen to serve as Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the former pulpit of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is only the fifth Senior Pastor in the history of the church and the youngest pastor ever selected to serve in that position. Reverend Warnock believes his service does not stop at the church door, and has been an advocate to expand health care coverage and to ensure hardworking Georgians can make a living wage. As Senator, Reverend Warnock will bring to Washington the concerns of struggling Georgia families who wonder why no one is looking out for them, and focus on fighting for quality, affordable health care, for the dignity of working people who are paid too little as our government works more for Wall Street, and to make sure every voice is heard.
